What’s New at Jakubas Dental Clinic...
Digital X-rays
In keeping with our commitment to our patients’ overall good health, we switched to digital x-rays in 2007. Using digital x-rays, we’ve reduced radiation exposure by 80 percent. Digital x-rays require no film or chemicals to process and produce an almost instantaneous image that can be further diagnosed with color contrast. While digital x-rays cost a bit more, we believe the benefits outweigh the slight increase in cost to our patients.
VELscope by Sapphire Early Oral Cancer Detection
We are now offering VELscope by Sapphire, a cancer-detecting system recently approved by the FDA. Using VELscope, Dr. Jakubas or one of her hygienist can screen a patient’s mouth for precancerous and cancerous growth.
Many patients ask if the screening with VELscope by Sapphire is necessary. Using this new technology, Dr. Jakubas is able to detect oral lesions before they have a chance to spread. Oral cancer is typically discovered in late stages, when the five-year survival rate is only 22%. If detected in early stages, the five-year survival rate is 80% or higher. VELscope powered by Sapphire can also help discover abnormal growths before they become cancerous, even below the surface.
The procedure takes about 10 minutes and costs $30. Although most insurance companies are not covering the screening procedure at this time, we believe it an important part of your overall preventative oral care.
